Have a healthy pregnancy
Having a baby is exciting, but also requires increased awareness of your health.
By taking good care of yourself, you provide your developing child with an environment
conducive to a healthy life.
When you think you are pregnant, see a health-care provider and ask questions about
pregnancy. Your doctor or midwife will estimate your "due date" (when
your baby will be born) based on the first day of your last menstrual period. You
will be weighed, your blood pressure will be checked, and an exam will be done.
Return pregnancy visits will then be scheduled.
It's important to eat a variety of healthy foods while you're pregnant. Include
grains (bread, cereal, rice, etc.), vegetables, protein foods (meat, eggs, beans,
etc.), fruit, and milk products in your meals. A regular intake of fluids is also
important during the day. Eating healthy snacks in addition to three small meals
a day will keep your energy up and help you feel better.
Moderate exercise is encouraged if your doctor or midwife says it's okay.
Walking and swimming are excellent forms of excersise. Also, avoid fatigue and stay
well hydrated.
Protect your baby by avoiding smoking, alcohol, and drugs. Even over-the-counter
medications can cause problems for an unborn child. Check with your doctor or midwife
before taking any medications.
Take time to learn about pregnancy. Many good books are available at your local
library or bookstore. Your health-care provider may provide brochures on various
topics of interest to you. Deseret Mutual's Self-help Medical Resource also
offers links to information about pregnancy. Try out the following links and then
